This morning on Twitter, I asked job seekers how they were ringing in the first official day of summer. One person eagerly responded that she had just accepted a temporary position. A new job seems like one of the best ways I can think to begin the summer. Continue reading
Anthony Balderrama
Anthony Balderrama writes about hiring trends, workplace issues and job search tactics for CareerBuilder.com and its blog The Work Buzz. He was born and raised in Dallas (115° degrees isn’t hot!) before moving to Chicago (-23° isn’t cold!). He studied creative writing, therefore everything he writes is usually cut in half once he realizes he spent 400 words just on the intro. He knows that looking for a job and dealing with co-workers are not always fun activities, and reading about them is even less thrilling. That’s why he’ll take any opportunity he can to mention his favorite TV show or band in an article. Basically Anthony’s doing whatever he can to avoid hate mail. Which states have the best and worst job markets right now?

One of the most frequently asked questions of the post-recession is, “Where are the jobs?” And we dutifully attempt to point you in the right direction, whether it’s our weekly list of companies hiring, a monthly list of companies hiring, or our occasional look at the state of employment around the country. Today’s average family looks nothing like the households on 1950s black-and-white TV, where the father wore a suit and tie and mom wore a dress and pearls to do housework. In fact, it’s hard to imagine your average family ever looked like “Father Knows Best” or “Leave it to Beaver.” The families in those shows didn’t face the same serious problems that most families do. In the last week we’ve told you about email etiquette, the importance of spelling, and why you should mind your wardrobe manners during the summer. That sounds like we’re total party killers, but we’re not, honestly! We’re just looking out for you and want you to land the jobs and get the promotions you deserve. Continue reading
You won’t hear “you’re hired” if you spell it “your hired”

Each spring, schools from around the U.S. send their best spellers to Washington, D.C., for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. At the Bee, a moderator tosses out words that most of us have never heard before, and these prodigious pupils rattle off a stream of letters as if stromuhr and Laodicean are everyday words. Nutritional experts recommend that everyone eats a bushel of vegetables each day and a serving of protein no bigger than a thimble. (I’m paraphrasing.) Also, throw in different oils to balance out your diet. Don’t forget to get your 30-60 minutes of moderate exercise each day. Continue reading

You might have noticed that The Work Buzz was down yesterday, and that bummed us out. Hopefully it bummed you out, too. If you didn’t even notice we were briefly absent, well, then, you didn’t miss anything.
So our usual list of companies hiring on Tuesdays got bumped to today. Continue reading
Companies hiring the class of 2011

By this time in May, many new graduates have already thrown their mortar boards and tassels in the air, and many soon-to-be graduates are counting down the days to do the same. It’s graduation time! This means long, boring ceremonies, relatives asking what you plan to do with your life, you not knowing how to answer that question, and hopefully some fun parties in between. Continue reading
