As I understand it, many companies will not participate in negative refs because of law suits - a former employee that can sue because of the effect of no job. In my HR dept, we are only allowed to verify employment details, such as job title, annual salary, and dates of employment. We can state that a person resigned or was dismissed, but we cannot discuss the details of why. And, no one from the company is allowed to give their personal refs - no exceptions. I would suggest downplaying the bad ref by providing some high-level, positive refs that can suggest the bad was just a flux. Research to see what actions you can take to stop the bad ref - there are plenty of people willing to help with just this type of thing. Good Luck!!

Can a past employer give you a bad referrence? Is there anything that I can do to stop him from saying bad things about me? I've went on plenty of possitive interviews, but because a bad reference I am still unemployed.
