Your paycheck and the 12 Days of Christmas

Finally, some lighthearted and fun news from the financial sector!

The analysts and economists at Pittsburgh-based PNC Bank have released their annual list where they discuss the costs of all of the gifts that are mentioned in the “Twelve Days of Christmas” carol.

You can take a look at the details of the costs of each item and the press release about the list here. But beyond the fun, the list is an interesting window into what’s happening in the economy and the job market.

  • The cost of paying the performers, for example (drummers drumming) went up a few percentage points – about the same increase seen in cost-of-living wage adjustments.
  • Rebekah McCahan, an assistant vice president and investment strategist for PNC, noted an interesting trend: “What’s really surprising is that our index follows overall Consumer Price Index trends. To think that the cost of a partridge in a pear tree would mirror what’s going on at Target, for example, is pretty interesting.”

*A side note: the bank is a previous employer of mine. I worked in PNC’s operations department several years ago.
