In previous articles, we’ve offered tips for using social media in your job search. That’s because more and more recruiters and hiring managers are using social networks to learn about and even contact potential candidates.
While most know how to lock down their profiles through privacy settings on sites such as Facebook and Twitter, LinkedIn is a little different. Continue reading

Recently, I was watching “What Not to Wear,” the TLC makeover show that ambushes unsuspecting, frumpy women in the hopes of swiftly taking them from mom jeans to Miranda Kerr.
In this particular episode, the makeover subject was nominated for the show by her co-workers, who thought her unprofessional style was hindering her career. Continue reading

I’ve noticed that workers often have a lot of shoes underneath their desks. Oddly enough, I always assume that if one were to be fired, packing up shoes might just be the weirdest job that person’s manager would be tasked with.
As you can see, when I rounded up the shoes from six of my nearest co-workers, I realized that we could outfit a staff double our size. Continue reading

There are few times of year when I look forward to my daily commute more than I do around Halloween. There’s just something about watching Marge Simpson check her BlackBerry on the subway or seeing a full-grown man walk into a downtown office building in a banana suit that is seriously entertaining. Continue reading

Dressing for summer in the office can be tough. Ninety-degree weather and a suit jacket don’t exactly mix, but neither do guys in shorts and corporate boardrooms. Not to mention the fact that, at any given point during the summer, it’s about 40 degrees cooler in the average office building than it is outside. Continue reading

Unfortunately, there’s not always a common thread in common sense. Meaning things that may seem completely obvious to one person might not be so readily apparent to another.
A simple way to prove this principle? Take a look around your office. Chances are, there’s a woman in a low-cut blouse, or a man wearing equally low-cut white athletic socks with his black suit, despite the fact that most people consider these to be clear “don’ts” for office attire. Continue reading

As companies start to get back in the black this year, many of us may be dressing up in red for the first time in years to attend an office holiday party. If it’s been awhile since your last company party, you’re probably trying to remember what, exactly, you used to wear to these things. Continue reading

A couple of weeks ago we told you about a survey that found over half of female respondents felt more productive at work when dressed provocatively. Now, according to a different survey, it’s apparent that employers don’t agree.
The poll, conducted by UK law firm DWF, found that employers overwhelmingly feel that dress codes are a necessary part of office life, and say that inappropriately dressed employees will be sent home to change or privately asked not to wear the improper attire again. Continue reading

Need a confidence boost at work? A new study suggests that — if you’re a woman — a low-cut top and sky-high stilettos may help your cause. According to a survey conducted by UK recruitment website HireScores.com, many women feel that they perform better at work when they dress “sexy.”
The study, which polled close to 1,300 British professionals, found that 78 percent of respondents felt that the way they dressed was the most important factor in enhancing their work performance. Continue reading

You’re probably thinking, “It’s Wednesday. Surely people aren’t still writing things about job interviews, job loss, workplace issues, and getting hired!” Well, my friend, you would be wrong. And here’s just a sample of what they’re writing: Continue reading
