Welcome to LaidOffCamp!

laidoffcampIf you’re out of work and looking for a boost of motivation, go to camp.

Not the kind where you roast marshmallows, sing campfire songs and stay awake all night fighting off forest creatures – this is a new kind of camp, especially for unemployed workers.

LaidOffCamp, created by 24-year-old Chris Hutchins, is designed to help job seekers and “nontraditional workers” (freelancers, entrepreneurs and startups) connect to share ideas, network and learn from each other.

There are several LaidOffCamp events in major cities around the United States including Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix and New York. Each camp includes presentations, workshops and discussion forums designed to “educate, empower and connect community members.” Topics include everything from building your personal brand, transitioning to a new industry, legal and accounting demands of launching a new business, finding affordable health insurance, alternative working spaces, alternative income sources and how to become a freelancer, according to the Web site.

Hutchins, who was laid off in December 2008, launched LaidOffCamp in San Francisco in March of this year. Other LaidOffCamps are organized by job seekers in the city hosting the event.
