The right job

The Country’s Best Job, Mathematically Speaking

Once again, the Powers that Be prove that being a nerd isn’t a bad thing. Or rather, liking to do things that supposed nerds do isn’t a bad thing. All those people that were beaten up in school for understanding what a parabola was? They’ve got the best jobs in the country.

This great article in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal lists some of the best and worst jobs in the country, according to a recent survey. The winner? Mathematicians. No, seriously. It’s not that I doubt being a mathematician is a good job; it’s just that I have admittedly not given much thought to the occupation before. I will now.How did the survey decide what’s the best and worst? They used five factors: environment, income, employment outlook, stress and physical demands. In the income department, these number experts do very well, with an average annual salary of $94,160.

What ranked as the worst job? Lumberjack. Another occupation I didn’t have on the radar but am eager to learn more about.

Take a look at the list and see what jobs you might want to go for … or avoid. And feel free to let us know if you’ve ever held one of these jobs and what your experience was like.

About Anthony Balderrama

Anthony Balderrama writes about hiring trends, workplace issues and job search tactics for CareerBuilder.com and its blog The Work Buzz. He was born and raised in Dallas (115° degrees isn’t hot!) before moving to Chicago (-23° isn’t cold!). He studied creative writing, therefore everything he writes is usually cut in half once he realizes he spent 400 words just on the intro. He knows that looking for a job and dealing with co-workers are not always fun activities, and reading about them is even less thrilling. That’s why he’ll take any opportunity he can to mention his favorite TV show or band in an article. Basically Anthony’s doing whatever he can to avoid hate mail.
