Having fun on the job

Did you know there are Web sites where workplace toys are sold? This is an AWESOME idea. One such site is Office Playground.

I’ve been wanting a big foam bat or sword, so I can bonk my co-workers on the head when they annoy me. Or just because I’m bored.

If you want to get co-workers involved, it could be time for an Office Olympics competition. This blog entry explains how it’s done and gives you a few ideas for games.

Do you have fun, awesome games or toys at work that are relaxing (yet safe and mostly sane)? I’d love to hear about them.

One thing I find relaxing is coloring. As childish as it may seem, it’s a good relaxing, repetitive activity that can really help you calm down. You don’t have to color pages featuring cartoon characters; there are several books online you can order that have neat designs intended more for adult coloring than children coloring. I have four books that have mandalas, designs intended for meditation, for coloring.

I have a slinky at my desk. Its nothing big but just playing with it gets my mind off work for a little while and it keeps my hands busy.

I love to do some stretching to refresh my body and mind. A great stretch is reaching doen to your toes while sitting in my chair. (great lower back stretch!) I also clasp my hands together then I stretch my arms over my head while leaning left, right and slightly back. I hold each stretch for 10-15 seconds and breath slowly and deeply. AHHH, serenity! This relaxes and rejuvenates body and mind.

I buy calendars with really beautiful pictures of nature. Seascapes, beaches, tropical paradise, gardens, castles… whatever strikes me. Whenever I need a quick mental break, I just look at the lovely picture, put myself in it and make up a quick little story in my mind about what I’m doing there, etc. It’s like a little 5-minute vacation to someplace exotic.

McDonald’s French Fries always make me happy if I’m in a funk at work.

My all-time favorite desk toy is a usb-powered missile launcher. It used to be that most of us only decorated our desk with plain round colored stress balls. Officeplayground.com, kleargear.com and a couple other office toy stores certainly changed all that!
