Last week we kicked off our contest, Talk to The Work Buzz! You submitted your great questions about interviews and we picked one to answer. Our winner is getting a copy of the book Career Building.
We like you. You like prizes. So we’re back with a new topic for the contest. This week we want you to submit your questions about accepting a job offer. Any issue that arises during the process of deciding whether or not to accept an offer is fair game.

This may be a weird question: Can you please tell me if it is against some kind of office etiquette to reach out to a previous interviewer that extended an offer to me that I did not accept??? I would like to contact a previous company that I interviewed with 2 years ago (because I kick myself that I didnt accept their offer). Is this considered networking, or just plain weird??!!! Thanks!

My question is I have 1.5 years of experience in my chosen field. I’ve had to resign from 3 places due to their lack of professionalism. Now I have to think of the last question on the application which is “Why did I Leave my last job?” I am having trouble thinking of a good answer, I don’t want to say I resigned on all of them. I’ve been out of work for 15 months. I applied for a position that required a lot of experience and the ability to collaborate with officers, managers and employees to reach consensus. I’ve been in the workforce over 20 years… even owning a database consulting business for 10.
They called the following week and interviewed me for 20-30 minutes. I thought I nailed the interview. Two days later they offered me the job… at $10/hour. (Did I mentioned I made more than four times that amount 2 years ago?!) And, they required a 6-month commitment. I was, well, pissed. I think I said, “That’s not going to happen”, and hung up.
A couple days later I swallowed my pride and called her back, figuring any money was better than no money. Plus, I just might build some skills and make some connections. They had already filled the position.
If this happens again, how should I handle accepting the position? Should I say anything at all about the compensation? And, if they require a 6-month commitment, should I even accept it?

How do explain gaps in work history if you do not have volunteer experience, attending school, family obligations or awards and freelance work to fills the gaps in work history. I have been unemployed for two years now, and having a hard time finding a job.

I have passed two parts of a 3 part interview process with a company, at the end of the second interview was told that I would be hearing something either way on Thurs.( my interview was on Tues)However by the following Thurs I had not heard anything so i called them on Mon. I spoke to one of the three people that had interviewed me,and he said they had a couple of late applicants to interview still,but he would give me a definate answer on Thurs. (once again it’s Thurs. apparently H.R. is closed on Fri.)Now it is Friday and still no word from anyone.
Is this a brush off technique (why wouldnt they just tell me they have chosen someone else if that was the case? or could they just be very disorganised? This is a large corporation I really don’t know what to think. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I’m 56 years old. I have experience from very large law firms as both Controller and Office Administrator (10 years). I have been a Controller in the publicly-traded, Fortune 500 sector (10 years) I have degrees in Finance/Accounting and Computer Science. I have references out the wazoo, and even letters of recommedation. But I get almost no reply from employers looking for full-time help and employers looking for part-time help obviously think that if they hire me I’ll only stay until something better comes along. Do I dumb-down my resume? Do I just give up? Have I gotten this far for nothing? Help!!

I left a job several years ago due to a DM who was out of control. Ex: 1. was angry and knocked a phone off a co-workers desk 2. slapped a co-worker 3. run up and down the hall cursing F, F, F, GD, MF, etc. There were only 5 of us in the office. 6 months after I left the DM was fired.
How or what do I tell an interviewer when it comes to this previous employer.
