Over the past several months, job growth has been sluggish, with the unemployment rate hovering above 8 percent. Yet, recent news on jobs and the economy shows promise, signaling that the country may slowly be moving in the right direction.
Highlights include:
- According to revised numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, from April 2011 through March 2012 the economy added 386,000 more jobs than its earlier estimate, bringing total hiring to 2.3 million.
- In the week ending Sept. 22, initial claims for unemployment insurance decreased by 26,000 from the previous week, from 385,000 to 359,000.
- The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index, which measures Americans’ confidence in the economy, shot up nine points in September to 70.3, its highest level since February.
- According to the S&P/Case-Shiller national home price index, which covers more than 80 percent of the U.S. housing market, the typical home price in July rose 1.6 percent from the previous month, marking the third straight month that prices in all 20 major markets followed by the index improved.
