Giving job hunting the old college try

One of my favorite movies about post-grad life strife is “Reality Bites.” Even though it came out 15 years ago, I think it’s a must-see for any new grad. Not only does it give a look at those tough months and years of trying to figure things out after you get that diploma, it has some of the best movie quotes of all times and possesses one of my favorite soundtracks. (Don’t judge!)

It came to mind while reading I was reading CareerBuilder’s Annual College Job Forecast. Yes, the news is pretty much what you would expect. While the Class of 2009 were still freshmen, the economy was booming and futures were bright. With a struggling job market and increasing competition for jobs, those same students aren’t so eager for the real world.

If you’re finding yourself among the thousands of students preparing for the job hunt, here are some things to keep in mind:

Entry level salaries will be down compared to 2008.
Of those who are hiring new grads: 36% will offer less than $30,000 and 33% will offer between $30,000 and $40,000. (Salary offers of $40,000 - $50,000 and more than $50,000 came in at 17% and 14%.)
Major new grad interview mistakes include: not dressing appropriately, no company knowledge, not turning off cell phones and not asking good questions.
