The best careers for your zodiac sign

Believe Lady Gaga when she says she was “Born This Way.” As an Aries, she’s a fire sign, making her naturally inclined to be high energy, very creative and fiercely independent.

Whether or not you actually accept  that Lady Gaga’s career success is a result of her zodiac sign, you’ve got to admit that it’s interesting to see what astrology says about personality and career path — because sometimes, like in Gaga’s case, it’s eerily correct.

“Many high school students take an aptitude test to guide them on a path that they would enjoy. Astrology works the same way — it’s like a blueprint of your personality,” says Katherine Metcalf, a professional astrologer from Phoenix, Ariz.  “We all come into this world with likes and dislikes, natural talents and areas where we need to learn and grow.”

A Gemini, for example, is totally comfortable networking and socializing, Metcalf says. “Put her in marketing or sales and she’s happy. Stick her in a cubicle with no human contact and she will wither.”

Want to know if your career is on the right track for your Zodiac sign?

We got a chance to talk to two longtime astrologists, Metcalf and Stacey Wolf — author of “Never Throw Rice at a Pisces” and resident astrologer for Cosmopolitan magazine — about the career paths best suited for each sign.

According to Metcalf, the most general way to identify your natural career strengths is by your element, of which there are four in the zodiac: Fire, Earth, Air and Water, with three signs belonging to each element.  Here’s what she says your element reveals about you:

(Not sure what your sign is? See below or click here)

Fire signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius): All Fire signs are natural leaders. They are high energy, very creative and independent. Like a flame — they get inspired quickly and can motivate others. However, they may burn themselves out by having too many irons in the fire.

Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn): All Earth signs are practical and grounded. They like having a plan and taking steps to achieve success. They do best in the corporate world where structure is needed.

Air signs (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius): Air signs are the thinkers of the zodiac. Don’t expect them to get their hands dirty — they prefer working on a computer or brainstorming ideas with others.

Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces): The Water signs are the touchy, feely people of the zodiac. Water is related to our emotions and many excel at counseling. They are highly empathic and each sign has its own unique energy.

Looking for a more in-depth analysis of what the cosmos hold for your career? Wolf pinpoints the key traits, and best and worst careers for each sign, below.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)
Key traits: Enthusiasm, creativity, warmth — a short attention span. As a leader, you have great ideas but dislike getting mired in the tiny details.
Best careers: Entrepreneur, sales, film/TV, stockbroker, military, rescue worker.
Careers to avoid: Any mundane, detail-oriented desk jobs.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
Key traits: Determined, hard-working, loyal, stubborn. You enjoy accomplishing tasks from big to small.
Best careers: Engineer, computer programmer, technician, administrative assistant.
Careers to avoid: Any job that involves taking too much financial risk.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
Key traits: Quick-witted, clever, adaptable, indecisive. You multi-task well and get bored easily so it’s hard to focus on the same project for long periods of time.
Best careers: Media, advertising, marketing, journalist/writer, delivery/driver.
Careers to avoid: Serious or mundane jobs that are extremely detail-oriented.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
Key traits: Caring, intuitive, creative, persevering, moody. You love to support and nurture people but can feel burdened by this responsibility, too.
Best careers: Real estate, interior design, psychologist, teacher, therapist (occupational, speech, etc)
Careers to avoid: Isolating Jobs that involve constant oversight and no creativity.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)
Key traits: Confident, ambitious, creative, generous and domineering. You shine in careers that show off your dynamic personality.  Plus you need to be in charge of something.
Best careers: Entrepreneur, entertainment, politics, public relations, maître d.
Careers to avoid: Any job where you are out of the spotlight.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)
Key traits: Detail-oriented, analytical, hard-working, yet fussy. You love to cross things off your to-do list.
Best careers: Editor, accountant, engineering, graphic design, florist.
Careers to avoid: Jobs that deal with a variety of people, who may not be as fastidious and perfectionist as you.

Libra (September 23 – October 22)
Key traits: Diplomatic, artistic, intelligent yet prone to indecision. Because you are graceful under pressure, you work best in partnerships with other people.
Best careers: Architect, designer, lawyer, counselor, behind-the-scenes in the arts.
Careers to avoid: Conventional jobs that lack creativity and independence of mind.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)
Key traits: Dynamic, creative, resourceful, strong willed. Outspoken and self-starting, you can only work in a career that you feel very passionate about.
Best careers: Psychologist, designer, law, humanitarian organizations or charitable foundations.
Careers to avoid: Anything you perceive as shallow or materialistic.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)
Key traits: Philosophical, optimistic, straightforward. You enjoy your freedoms of movement and self-expression and do best working in a field that allows you both.
Best careers: Entrepreneur, airline pilot, sports industry, police officer, flight attendant.
Careers to avoid: Any full-time desk job.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)
Key traits: Ambitious, resourceful, patient and authoritarian. Driven and competitive, any project you take on, you’ll do what ever it takes to be the best.
Best careers: Finance, business development/management, doctor, trainer.
Careers to avoid: A financially risky job or a career where there is no room for advancement.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)
Key traits: Analytical, clever, inventive, and obstinate. Friendly and autonomous, you get along with most people, yet you have no problems voicing a divergent opinion.
Best careers: Apps developer, veterinarian, scientist, engineer, alternative care practitioner.
Careers to avoid: Any conventional job that discourages independent thinking or differing opinions.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)
Key traits: Compassionate, intuitive, flexible and overly sensitive. A visionary like Albert Einstein and Dr. Seuss, you work best in a situation where you can actualize what you see in your imagination.
Best careers: Artist, designer, psychologist, entertainment, charitable foundations, dog walker.
Careers to avoid: Any job that has a physically or psychologically grueling schedule or deals with the harsh realities of life.

I work as a career consultant , and I can say that there are many aspects to all of us.  Not only is the archetypes that astrology shows, but even here here are many different aspects of us that are told in our charts that are demonstrated through other aspects than our sun sign.  We need to look at everything to get a complete understanding of ourselves, which is important in any career/job search..

I post more about my thoughts of the connection between spirit and work at @kenmattsson

I am an aquarius , libra moon, virgo rising. None of the careers suggested for Aquarius even remotely appeal to me. Looking for a career change after the birth of my second child and don't know where to begin. Should I be looking at my sun sign? Moon? Rising?? 10th house? Help!!

Hey I'm a Virgo who's sign generally perfers being behind the scenes and out of the spotlight. My dream is to star in musical theatre/film. I was born September 6th and was late so maybe I was meant to be aLeo?

I'm a capricorn and this is pretty inaccurate on my side. I don't want any career in finance or business. I don't want to be a doctor nor trainer or anything related to the two. I rather be in a creative field like writer, painter, or fashion designer. Everyone else's seems pretty legit though

Hi Katherine,

I'm a Aries and it defines me to a "t". I am into astrology and have been doing some reading on it for some years now. I have read a lot of books and posting about the different types of careers that would fit an Aries and that's where I'm having problems with. I am in the medical field and have been for 9 yrs. I work as a Medical Assistant in a Pediatrics office. I am ready for a change for myself as well as my family, the job is not challeging enough and I'm ready for a career, it's repetative and it lacks imagination, as well as I'm tired of punching a clock and working on someone elses time. As well as no room for advancement. I want to know what career I would be good at doing and how can I get in contact you to get this information?

My birthday is May 22. I was born at 9:01 pm. Sometimes i tend to be more like a Taurus because I love to get dirty in my garden. My dream is to work at a job where I can dig in the dirt. Or, maybe I just THINK I would like that and maybe my job as a banker is just perfect for me. What do you think?

I honestly feel so lost in my career path currently and am wondering if I'm doing the wrong thing , this makes me feel more lost.

Do you not keep up with Zpdiac signs? They are now 2000 years outdated and if you were once a Pisces you are now a Aquaries.
I'm 52 and never thought much of horiscopes but read the update on MSN about 3 months ago. I am totally an Aquarius and it fits me to a T
Doesn't help my career choice but now I understand why. Ha

I get very frustrated with astrology, because, like the first commenter, I feel like I am caught between an earth and a fire sign (technically, according to the astrology charts, I am a Taurus, but I do not feel like one). I am totally confused by what is said above that earth signs prefer corporate structure. This is totally untrue of me. I absolutely abhor corporate structure and like to do things my own way. I can't stand it when I have someone constantly looking over my shoulder and giving me advice. An engineer, computer programmer or an administrative assistant -- yuck! One of my graduate degrees is in marketing!!

fred
fred

I too can't stand structure or any of the career ideas for Capricorns. I've always had to do things my own way, love being my own boss, being creative! I have noticed certain aspects of astrology to be spot on or at least close, but as far as career advise, I just must be a mold breaker!

Maybe I'm from the 13th sign! Is there a name for the 13th sign or can I name it? Fred has a nice ring to it!

I am a Pisces. I have worked in Medical Sales, I worked as a Pilot and Flight Instructor, banner tower with an airplane and I ended up as a retired high rise Painter. (Towers, Rocket Towers at Kennedy Space Center) Sand Blaster. I do not think I fit the profile of a Pisces.

I find these articles quite interesting since I've always been curious to see what astrology has to say about my sign, which is an Aries. The careers that i hear on articles like this, is always amusing and interesting. Since their hardly ever say the exact same thing(the only thing that is consistant for careers are sales and film/tv) and always have some kind of astrologer to back it up which makes me believe their just bogus and of course the only real way to know about your sign is actually reading it on your own since you don't know who they are and their education and importantly, how well they do their job.

Anyways, are these base on the chinese zodiak as well? how are you suppose to tell this from that since the zodiak have different characteristics based on your time of birth and i think something else as well but forget what exactly. Or does astrology don't care to base these studies on what other zodiacs have to offer?

I am a gemini/libra/leo age 62. sometimes we fall into a career out of college because training is available. after that you get stuck on a career path because the job pays your bills. I hate sales and marketing (don't mind if other people do it) and have worked as a claims adjuster for decades because it paid the bills and helped me pay for school for my girls after my divorce. if negotiation requires the gift of gab, I would say a gemini could excel with this aspect of claims but organization has never been my forte and is always a huge struggle for me. enter part two of my life--I teach dance and have a troupe but performance has always been a gift to my spirit, not my pocketbook....so now I am working on this direction in my life due to the bad job market...wish me luck!

I'm a cancer and started out on a career path for teaching music and now instead I do genealogy work. I still wonder what the most fulfilling career path for me would be... hmm. I guess it's an almost 30 life crisis, lol. I have also always tried to ignore astrology but the characteristics for cancer and water signs just fit me perfectly. Thanks for sharing this article.

Hi Katherine, I am a Pisces (water) with my moon in Taurus (earth) which, when combined makes mud! I am at a place in life where a career path change is necessary. I love technology, structure, and emotional balance. I am detail oriented, creative, and able to repair or build almost anything. Known for creating uncommon, yet simple solutions for people, and equipment. (Apologies if this sounds like a cheesy resume'). I welcome any suggestions you may offer on where a muddy bull-fish might find career satisfaction. Thank you.

I have always believed that astrology and the 12 Zodiac signs represent a basic personality chart, that by combining several different calculations and variables in relation to time, and celestial movements, reflect similar basic traits among people born under similar time group periods. It has been my experiance that people display traits of their given zodiac signs. Maybe in different degrees but always with constants. For example, most sagittarius people that i have met are rather stubborn, pigheaded, independant people. Pisces always tend to be emphathetic, hopeless romantics, over emotional, extremely analytical etc....I compare the zodiac to a modern day psycho analytical personality tests like the D.I.S.C system which divides people into 4 basic personality traits where a person is mostly D or I or S or C but can contain parts of all the other personalities and help the individual realize how co-workers and friends view you as a person. I find that people always fit into one of those four personality categories. Learning who you really are and how you may appear to those around you in the workplace is a valuable tool, inspiring better interpersonal relations between employees

Gwen
Gwen

I have worked for numerous companies who employ the "DISC" profile to not only new hires but also teach it in order to have their sales staff understand how to sell to the various personalities.
I think it is simplified astrology.

Mariah
Mariah

I like the idea, but I'm an aries, and the career options I saw, don't exactly fit what I would be comfortable doing. I like detail because it gives me somthing to focus on.

I am one of the Astrologers that was interviewed. First I want to say thank you to Kaitlin Madden for writing the article-she is not professing wether she believes or not-she is merely making it known that Astrology is another tool that can be helpful on your career journey.

For those of you who think astrology is "fly by night"-it has been around since 2900 BCE!Astrology was considered the first science and in ancient times astrology and astronomy were one science.Something we all use daily is a calendar-it is based on the amount of time between new moons -about 29 days.

I have been in business more than 20 years and much of my focus has been on career readings. There are many more factors that must be considered to finding the perfect career than looking at the sun sign.

When I do a Career Reading, I take an indepth look at your 2nd (what you value and how you handle money) 6th (type of work environment you would be happy in) and 10th houses(what you hope to achieve in your career).
I look at which signs govern those houses, the ruling planet and placement and if there are easy or challenging aspects. After taking all those factors into play-then I analyze what type of career you would be happy with.

I'm not trying to convince the nay sayers-just trying to educate them! I think it's good to be skeptical until proven otherwise. I'm just asking you to at least look into it before you dismiss it. I was once a skeptic too- but the accuracy of astrology has proven itself to me over and over again.

I wish you all great success in finding the right jobs and careers! Believe!

Hi, Katherine ...I'm a Taurus(Virgo Deconate, born May 10th) with a 5th house Aries Moon(yes I do have a temper every once and awhile) and a Uranus and Ascendent in Scorpio(think of me as superman in a batman suit, and you'll get what I mean...). I also love astrology as well for the past 3 years and I want to ask you if you dont mind: one of my childhood dreams in this life is to become a professinal bowler for the Professional Bowlers Association. Recently, I've been practicing my curve shots(hooks, as they call it) to play the deep inside angle at the 31st board as a dont want to just bowl straight throws all the time as I believe I want to be ultra good at this sport I soo loved since almost birth(another thing people with a mars in virgo want out of themselves, Perfection at what we do down to the details) and every time I go into my local bowling alley(I bowl at a AMF cenrter in Baltimore County), I ended up choking due to nervousness(I'm a Mars in Virgo, and unfortunately people with this sign like me have this trait with this placement), distractions, and endless amounts of emotional stress taking my focus away and throwing me out of my game. Can you, or any other astrology expert here reading this look at my chart and see what I can do to improve my game and figure out my chances of making it to the PBA and get on TV for a chance to be one of bowling's all time legends as I'm serious about this and would like to become the next Walter Ray Williams Jr or Dick Weber.

Thanks!

This is really not all that funny. With unemployment skimming under 10%, FOR YEARS, I don't think it's appropriate to make fun of finding a job, any job.

Wow. Some people take this WAY too seriously. It's fun. Smile. Laugh. Enjoy.

For me it is 100% spot on - funny how accurate (in general I take this stuff with a huge grain of salt and I never use it to guide my future actions). For my best friend it doesn't describe her at all. Those into astrology know it's also not just about your Sun sign.

Everyone else - enjoy. And stop taking life so seriously. Yeesh.

Personality Traits of a Scorpio
Scorpio Scorpios Intense Driven Sexual

Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac and represented by the scorpion. Scorpios are truly the contradicting sign. They can be the best and worst of both worlds - independent and clingy, loving and cold, authoritative and weak. Above all else, they are intense about almost everything.

Scorpios are often mysterious people because their true feelings run so deep and they keep their emotions hidden. They also like to uncover things under the surface of others and are very intuitive. Their intense desire to uncover things combined with their determination and loyalty make them great spiritual leaders, scientist, and doctors. They are very adaptable, often changing careers and going down new paths.

They can be strong willed and determined, almost to the point of being stubborn. This makes them great competitors, even if they are able to hide this desire to win from you. This also makes Scorpios very dominant, controlling and passionate. When they do not have a positive outlet for self-expression, they often turn inwards and become destructive.

When wronged, they do not easily forgive. It is almost as if the Scorpio sign invented the word "revenge." However, they just as easily never forget an act of kindness and are always ready to repay it. Scorpios are very loyal friends, but can be possessive. Scorpios are also conservative when it comes to money but when they do spend it; they know the right investments to make.

Brilliant Minds
Scorpios have a native understanding of humans and often show psychic tendencies. They are often interested in the mind and its potential powers. Scorpio is the sign of many of life's mysteries: birth, sex, death, and regeneration. They are willing to explore things others are afraid to look into such as different religions and the occult.

Intense
Scorpios are often a force to be reckoned with. They are passionate, committed and in the same turn, if you are an enemy, they can be just as intensely ruthless. Scorpios are so intense, there are few challenges they are not willing to meet. They will use any information at hand to beat competitors and do not hesitate to move in for the kill.

Weaknesses
Because of their intensity, Scorpios can be jealous, possessive, and controlling. When mistreated, they will make it their objective to get revenge, even if it takes years. They like to keep their true emotions hidden from others, which causes people to perceive them as cold and uncaring.

Parts of the Body Ruled by Scorpio
The genitals - Because the genitals rule them, Scorpios are susceptible to venereal disease and urinary infections. They may also suffer from fatigue and bad health due to their explosive emotions.

I went to school for archictecture, electronic's engineering and computer programming but couldn't see myself sitting behind a desk or in an office. Hopefully you can give me some insight.
