The Recession, as drawn by a cartographer

The New York Times continues to be impressive in its interactive graphics with today’s Geography of a Recession map. Using the various options on the side of the page and the nifty zoom option, you can see how the recession is affecting each county, rural area, or metropolitan clusters by unemployment numbers.

As expected, every area’s seen a rise in unemployment, but some areas are hit harder than others. The map’s interesting just to look at if you’re curious about your own region. It’s also helpful if you’re thinking about relocation in the near future.

It’s worth nothing that for all the doom and gloom we’re reading about, there are a lot of places still not hit that hard by the current situation.

He was born and raised in Dallas (115° degrees isn’t hot!) before moving to Chicago (-23° isn’t cold!). He studied creative writing, therefore everything he writes is usually cut in half once he realizes he spent 400 words just on the intro. He knows that looking for a job and dealing with co-workers are not always fun activities, and reading about them is even less thrilling. That’s why he’ll take any opportunity he can to mention his favorite TV show or band in an article. Basically Anthony’s doing whatever he can to avoid hate mail.
