Work/Life
Do you feel appreciated and admired at work?

CAREEREALISM.com writer J.T. O’Donnell has a great post today about what many workers crave from their companies and bosses but don’t always get: a compliment.
You can see her entire post here. I thought it was especially interesting that J.T. undescored the difference between appreciation and admiration.
According to her, appreciating someone can sound like “I need you,” which can sound more like an obligation. Expressing admiration for someone really reaches them at a deeper level.
Of course, this concept isn’t limited to workplace conflict or employee retention; I remember seeing an episode of “Oprah” years ago where she said that 95% of the issues discussed on her show could be prevented by just having people acknowledge one another.
With an uncertain economy, pay increases and tangible perks might not be on the table. Recognition just might be the best tools companies have to retain employees.
