Commutes: The best and the worst

A while back we talked about extreme commutes, with long travel times covering long distances.

But what about the average commute? Forbes.com assembled a list of the 10 cities with the best commute times and the cities with the 10 worst commutes.

The best:

  1. Buffalo, NY
  2. Salt Lake City, UT
  3. Milwaukee, WI
  4. Oklahoma City, OK
  5. Pittsburgh, PA
  6. Cleveland, OH
  7. Hartford, CT
  8. Kansas City, MO
  9. Cincinnati, OH
  10. Richmond, VA

And the worst:

  1. Atlanta, GA
  2. Detroit, MI
  3. Miami, FL
  4. Orlando, FL
  5. Dallas, TX
  6. Tampa, FL
  7. Washington, DC
  8. Houston, TX
  9. Los Angeles, CA
  10. San Francisco, CA

According to the survey, the cities with the best commute times overall were cities that had some advantages in terms of population and geography. The cities with the worst times often had antiquated roads that caused bottlenecks of traffic. Many of the “worst” cities also have experienced massive growth. As a result, demand has exceeded the capacity of the existing roads and transit systems.
